- Normalize for seasonality using last year’s period if applicable
Outcome: You now see the AI Overview share of voice and can quantify how much of your organic performance depends on being cited or expanded in the Overview.
Step 2: Isolate AI Overview impact with a clean experiment frame
You need to know whether changes are driven by AI Overviews or other variables. Here is my controlled approach.
- Construct matched query cohorts
- Cohort A: Queries with AI Overview coverage that cite your site
- Cohort B: Queries with AI Overview coverage that do not cite your site
- Cohort C: Similar queries with no AI Overview coverage
Match cohorts by intent, device mix, and seasonality. Keep brand and non-brand separate.
- Calculate deltas
- For each cohort, compute changes in impressions, clicks, CTR, and revenue per 1,000 impressions vs the previous 28 days and previous year period
- Attribute deltas to AI Overview presence by comparing A vs C and B vs C
- Quantify expansion effects
- Within AI Overview queries, split by whether your site appears in the initial answer, only in expansions, or not at all
- Track CTR differential across the three conditions. Early case studies show branded queries can vary heavily when sources are trapped behind expansions
- Segment by page type
- Map landing pages to templates: how-to, comparison, category, product, glossary, long-form guide, news
- Compute impact per template. This guides which templates need structural changes
Outcome: A defensible analysis that shows where AI Overviews help, where they cannibalize, and where they conceal you behind expansions.
Step 3: Diagnose why pages lose AI Overview citations
Google’s help docs outline eligibility signals and common exclusion reasons. Translate that into a field checklist.
Use the new filters to pull the following:
- Queries where you were cited last period but not this period
- Queries where you appear only in expansions, not in the initial answer
- Queries where competitors are cited but you are not, despite similar topical authority
Run this page-level audit:
- Answer completeness and clarity
- Does the page give a concise, direct answer near the top in 40 to 80 words, with a clear heading that matches the query?
- Are steps or bullets structured so an AI can extract without confusion?
- Evidence density
- Are claims backed by sources, data, or original research?
- Are author credentials and revision dates visible and credible?
- Consensus alignment
- Does your answer contradict high-consensus guidance without clear sourcing?
- If you offer a contrarian view, do you cite primary data or standards bodies?
- Technical integrity
- Clean canonicalization, no accidental noindex
- Fast LCP, CLS within thresholds
- Clear language, minimal boilerplate
- Structured signals
- Relevant schema types where applicable: HowTo, FAQ, Product, Article
- Proper use of headings and ordered lists for steps
- Duplication and cannibalization
- Are multiple pages competing for the same query and diluting authority?
- Consolidate overlapping content and redirect secondary pages
- Freshness and scope
- Is the content updated to reflect new facts or standards?
- Has scope drifted too broad or too narrow compared to the dominant interpretation of the query?
- Media and formats
- Supporting images with alt text and captions
- Short video or interactive elements if they add clarity
Outcome: A prioritized list of fixable causes behind citation loss or expansion-only coverage.
Step 4: Prioritize fixes with a risk and upside framework
I use a simple scoring model that mirrors how I plan race pacing: focus on the moves that deliver the biggest gain per unit of effort.
Scoring inputs:
- Revenue exposure: sessions and revenue or proxy value at risk
- Query intent: informational vs commercial vs navigational weightings
- Brand sensitivity: is the query brand-protective or category-defining?
- Competitive displacement: number of competitors gaining citations
- Fix effort: content edit vs structural rewrite vs tech lift
- Probability of recovery: based on audit findings and historical response to similar fixes
Create a 2x2 action grid:
- High exposure, high probability: do now
- High exposure, low probability: pilot targeted experiments
- Low exposure, high probability: bundle into batch sprints
- Low exposure, low probability: backlog
Translate into a two-week sprint plan with owners, specs, and acceptance criteria.
Step 5: Make templates and patterns AIO-friendly
Where I see consistent wins:
- Place a direct, factually tight answer up top. Use 1 to 2 paragraphs, then a scannable list
- Add a Why it matters section that ties to outcomes and supports credibility
- Include clear sources in the body. If you have primary data, state it plainly
- Use consistent heading patterns: H2 for the core answer, H3 for steps, H3 for FAQs
- Implement relevant schema and validate
- Keep the URL and title aligned with the query’s dominant intent
- Update recency-sensitive facts at a predictable cadence and show the updated date
For long-form guides, insert a 150 to 250 word executive summary that answers the query in plain English. It acts like tennis ready position. The AI can pick it up quickly, and humans benefit too.
Step 6: Tie GSC data to analytics and revenue
GSC now separates AI Overview traffic. You still need to connect that to engagement and revenue.
- Export daily GSC data for AI Overview segments to your warehouse
- Join to GA4 session and conversion data by landing page and date
- If you use GA4’s Query Intent dimensions, bake intent into the join so every metric is intent-aware
- Create a derived channel named Organic AI Overview to sit alongside Organic Search
- Calculate value per 1,000 impressions and value per click for each segment and intent
